Freight & Shipping Industry in Pakistan
Economic development of a country depends upon various factors such as its natural resources, capital goods and human resources. Pakistan has emerged, as a good place for investment and its stock exchange is one of the best performing bourses in the emerging markets. Pakistan also see an expansion in trade finance which will involve building good relationships with other countries as they see a great potential to expand trade and investment between them. All in all, the economy is growing; it has shown a positive number in terms of GDP, exports, production, foreign investment, and relationship with other countries.
Freight sector inefficiencies and low service quality are costing the national economy billions annually. It has been proposed to devise a new regulatory framework to develop freight transport infrastructure to facilitate inter-modal connectivity and private sector participation since one of the major challenges facing the fractured transport system is the lack of a unified planning structure.
The transport system has direct and indirect linkage with all the important sectors of the economy. The size of transport infrastructure affects the economic development of any country. An efficient and good quality transport system contributes to economic growth by lowering production cost. Pakistan has several thousand kilometers of land borders with its neighboring countries: Iran, Afghanistan, China and India, with five main entry points but the volume of trade through these routes is very low. Geographically, Pakistan is divided in to Eastern and Western corridors and flow of traffic is from North to South as seaports are located in the South. In Pakistan, Road, Rail and Air are three major components of transport infrastructure.
As more than 95 per cent of the total freight trade of Pakistan is seaborne, the overall objective of the Ministry of Ports and Shipping includes modernization and corporatization of Ports and Shipping with a view to introducing landlord concept in Ports, rationalizing Ports’ tariffs in order to be competitive in the region, introducing modern technology and data base in line with the present day trends.
